Goran has a Stadium!
A special moment, back in the 2016. A special moment for the ATP tournament, a special moment for Umag, for Croatian tennis and above all for Goran Ivanišević.
Together with his family, with tennis legends Andre Agassi and Juan Carlos Ferrero, and in the company of Ronald Korotaj, Director of Istraturist and President of the Organizing Committee of the tournament, and Lawrence Frankopan, tournament director, he cut a big ribbon on the beautiful inscription that testifies that the ATP stadium in Umag now bears his name.
“It is a great honour and great responsibility. I want to thank Istraturist, Lawrence Frankopan and the Lukšić family for this. My family is here with me who is largely responsible why I am standing here today. I want to thank all my coaches who made me a better player and a better person, as well as those who have always been with me, who supported but also criticized me. They also made me better”, thanked Goran.
“This is a Croatian tournament that we are organizing now for 27 years and as much as we love the Umag “shell”, we thought if this is a Croatian tournament, if there are Croatian players playing here and we are giving them a chance to start their career in world tennis, then
we have to give them also an incentive to play even better. And since we know which tennis player has given the most to Croatian tennis, it was not hard to decide that the stadium will be called after Goran Ivanišević”, revealed Ronald Korotaj.
Lawrence Frankopan admitted that it has been a desire for a long time to pay such a tribute to Goran Ivanišević. “My big goal and big dream was to award Goran for everything he has done for Croatian tennis. Goran, thank you”!
